Cavallaro's Cavalcade of Carnage
BEST OF THE MONTH

The Golden Child by Lucinda Berry

This is a forthcoming one from Berry. The drop date is January 12, 2027. If you've read Saving Noah, you know what Berry is all about. This isn't an easy read. You will go back and forth between sadness and anger about 30 times, while being held in suspense the entire way. I stayed up until 3 am finishing it, which I rarely do. Don't miss it.

WORST OF THE MONTH

A Cold Mind by David Lindsey

It was recommended to me as a splatterpunk crime novel, but it was just a boring police procedural with a few gruesome scenes.

The rest:

When a Darkness Falls by Paul Zindel. Zindel's foray into adult horror. More extreme than I expected, and very good in spots, but ultimately, he is a better YA writer.  Grade:  C

Mercy House by Adam Cesare. This is a reprint of one of Adam's early novels. Not necessary. He is a much better writer now.  Grade:  D

The Space Cat by Okorafor/Ford (graphic novel). Cute YA graphic novel about a cat.....well, a cat who has a spaceship.  Grade:  B

Slaughterhouse Moan by Daniel J Volpe. Very graphic, extreme horror novel. Not bad, but I've read better from Volpe.  Grade:  C

Let's Go Play at the Adams' by Mendel W Johnson. The infamous 1970's "paperback from hell" novel. It's much better than I expected. Disturbing, yet lyrical at times. Grade:  B

Gimme a Kiss by Christopher Pike. For some reason, this is the Pike book that was chosen for re-release by Simon and Schuster. Not his best. Grade:  C

Bloody 13 by Sarah Langan. Super fun dystopian pandemic drama. Quick read, even for a novella.  Grade:  B

Kill 6 Billion Demons by Parkinson-Morgan (graphic novel). Gnarly art, but the story is way too complex, and the characters are flat. Grade:  D

The Secret Sea by Barry Lyga. Forget about this one. The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl is the one you want.  Grade:  D

Helen of Wyndhorn by King/Evely (graphic novel). Great concept (Wizard of Oz meets Conan the Barbarian), but it's weighed down by constant info dumps. Great art though.  Grade:  D

That's it!
